Belgian Cultural Sector for Ukraine

In response to the immense tragedy of the Russian war against Ukraine, and the quantities of requests for help that overflow the existing support organizations, we Belgian artists, cultural workers and cultural institutions, join efforts to create the pan-Belgian emergency fund to overcome the hardships many artists and cultural workers are facing.

In the meanwhile of creating a proper web-platform, this landing page is the first step in coordinating collective effort all over Belgium.

To address emergency here go three first & easy actions

This initiative aims to create synergy and cross-network cooperation between multiple already existing and emerging initiatives on institutional and individual, country-wide and local levels.

The objective of this crowd-funding is to provide emergency support for Ukrainian-based artists and cultural workers, both for those who have remained in Ukraine and who fled outside the country. The fund will cover survival/emergency needs, short-term “living grants” to ensure basic standard of living and security, and support “rescue” demands for evacuating artworks and archives of individual artists and cultural workers. This fund will support artists and cultural workers of all nationalities who need to escape their country because of the war against Ukraine.

Any ideas are welcome, their scale does not matter. Each sand seed counts. We invite opportunities both from institutions AND individuals. Residencies, grants, accommodation, job opportunities (short-term and long-term, online and offline), institutional or individual mentorship, expanding visibility (exhibitions, conferences etc.), generating financial means (commissions, auctions) etc. - the list can be endless. Sharing this list enables collective reflection and nourishes its generative potential. Share with us what you and/or your institution can offer now, next month, in a year time. Having a perspective gives hope.

We target and work towards creating structural cooperation across Belgium on mid-to-long term basis in order to support artists and cultural workers at risk caused by the war in Ukraine. This coordinated effort should contribute to multiple already existing national and European initiatives to build an agile infrastructure for solidarity, participation and care.

Here you can find first ideas / axes for the post-emergency plan.

Organise locally on your city/community level. Check if any institution or individual already joined this coordinated initiative in your city. Instead of creating new structures we rely on local organisations and individuals and their power to coordinate action and pull the resources. As a first step organise a city assembly with all cultural actors. See how cultural workers of Ghent did it on March 18. Get in touch if you need support in organising a similar event. Keep us informed about your proposals and decisions.
